Obtaining the FCC License for GMRS Radio

So you’ve got a GMRS radio and you are ready to get a license. The following instructions will take you step by step in registering with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

1. Obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN): [56

Go to the FCC Registration System (CORES) and register for an FRN. [56

  • You'll need to confirm yourself as an individual and complete the FRN registration form. [5

  • Keep your FRN number in a safe place, as you'll need it to log into the ULS. [2

2. Apply for the GMRS License: [347

Log into the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) using your FRN and password. 

  • Click on "Apply for a New License". 

  • Select "ZA - General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)" from the radio service dropdown list. 

  • Follow the prompts to complete the application form. 

  • Review your application and click "Continue to Certify". 

  • Sign your application by typing your name in the boxes provided and clicking the "Submit" button. [347

3. Pay the License Fee: [8

The FCC sets the license filing fees annually, and licenses are granted for 10 years. [8

  • You will be prompted to pay the license fee during the application process. [2

4. Download your license: [9

Once your application is granted, you can download your license from the License Manager. 

  • Log into the License Manager with your FRN and password. 

  • Click on "Download Electronic Authorizations". 

  • Select the call sign you wish to download and click the Download button. [9
